ECX Overview

Catalogic ECX is an application that delivers visibility, insight, and control into your IT environment. It provides an enterprise-wide view of IT objects and files, so you can discover, use, copy, search, and report on data, giving you greater understanding of your important organization assets. ECX catalogs files and other IT objects making them easily searchable, and provides the ability to distinguish where data copies are located in your IT environment and leverage the most appropriate copy for any given use case.

Use ECX to truly understand your rapidly growing data environment for the first time – identifying both efficiencies and inefficiencies such as sprawl in the data center. It rapidly catalogs unstructured information on both primary and secondary storage, across all Snapshot instances and replicas on NetApp storage systems. It catalogs NetApp Data ONTAP-based file data (NFS/CIFS), IBM storage and FlashCopy Manager storage systems, and EMC storage systems, as well as objects in a VMware infrastructure. ECX provides a wide range of reports on cataloged information, including reporting around resource utilization, protection, and file-level statistics. It lets you quickly validate whether your critical data is protected, as well as alerts you to data being over-protected. ECX is designed to scale as you grow from a small number of storage systems to the largest of Big Data environments.

ECX rapidly searches through EMC, IBM, and NetApp storage on a network to identify objects such as files, directories, volumes, and qtrees, filtered by type, name, size, or date modified. Objects can be found across all tiers of information in a single search, giving you comprehensive visibility of your objects, their copies, and their locations.

By deploying ECX software, you can:

  • Reduce your storage by recovering valuable capacity.
  • Gain visibility into your data across both primary disks and all tiers of snapshot copies.
  • Assure your data is properly protected at all times.
  • Dive inside virtual disks and snapshots to discover objects and associated information such as name, size, and date modified plus SnapVault and SnapMirror relationships.
  • View multiple instances of the same object, including its original location, snapshot location, and mirrored location.

ECX utilizes automated Copy Data Management workflows for replicating and intelligently reusing snapshots, vaults, and mirrors in your EMC, IBM, NetApp, and VMware environments, as well as application servers. Copy Data and Use Data policies offer control over testing and cloning use cases, instant recovery, and full disaster recovery. Through Copy Data and Use Data policies, you can:

  • Copy data from an application server, EMC, IBM, or NetApp storage device, or VMware ESX resource to multiple locations.
  • Reuse and recover resources from snapshots, vaults, and mirrors.
  • Support use cases for automated data protection, recovery, DevOps, Dev/Test, data and database validation with data masking, through the use of automated Instant Access, Instant Virtualization, volume, and file restore functionalities.

Analytics provide insight into storage consumption across all tiers, and data protection reporting quickly identifies unprotected objects to help you ensure compliance. Based on the same cataloged information, ECX generates reports for:

  • Applications
  • Storage Utilization
  • Storage Protection
  • Protection Compliance
  • File Analytics
  • ECX System Management
  • DPX
